Attached please find the information on the upcoming 24th Annual Cleveland Kendo Tournament / GNEUSKF Championships to be held ion March 30 - April 1, 2012. Also note the information on the 4th Annual Iaido Seminar on April 1, 2012 We hope that you will come to Cleveland and participate in the weekend-long activities of kendo/iaido.

2011 Cornell Kendo Tournament       POSTED 9.17.11

The tournament will be held in Ithaca on October 22 and 23, 2011. The first day of the tournament will consist of individual matches (open participation) ending with a seminar lead by Kato-sensei and jigeiko; the second day will consist of collegiate team matches (undergraduate and graduate students only). This year, we are also expecting a greater pool of participants, including kenshi from Canada; a distinguished panel of shinpan headed by Kato-sensei; as well as a guest performance by Cornell's taiko group, Yamatai, during the lunch break.

Please note that the tournament is taking place at a new venue this year. Unfortunately, there is no store within walking distance to purchase food or drinks, so please plan accordingly.

Completed registration forms must be emailed to cornellkendoclub@gmail.com by October 18, or if mailing, postmarked by October 14.

We would also greatly appreciate an RSVP by email before sending in registration forms.

Waivers and fees may be handed in the morning of the tournament.

Case Kendo's Student Cup: Promotion Exam      POSTED 8.30.11

This email is to inform you of the Promotion Exam that will take place during our Student Cup! The exam date is Saturday, August 24th, beginning at 3pm sharp. The exam location is the same as that of the tournament, which will be held at 2128 Adelbert Road, Cleveland, OH 44106. Please come prepared to show our sensei some good kendo! The application and questions for the written portion of the exam are attached to this email :)

Some important things to remember:

•Testing will ONLY occur up to the 3rd dan.
•Applications are due to Inoshita Sensei's address, to be postmarked by September 16, 2011.
•Checks must be made out to GNEUSKF.
•You must include a copy of your most recently received menjo and essay with your application!
•Be advised that you must be a dues-paying member of the AUSKF of at least 1 year to test for any rank.

You're Invited to: Case Kendo Club's 2nd Annual Student Cup      POSTED 8.24.11

On behalf of the Case Western Reserve University Kendo Club, I would like to formally invite all of you to our 2nd Annual Student Cup. This event will be held on the 23rd-25th of September, 2011. We welcome all high school, university, and recent alumni to participate in our event! Furthermore, I am happy to announce that this event will also include a shinpan seminar, a promotional exam up to the 3rd dan, and many opportunities for godo geiko.

The schedule for this event is as follows:

Friday, 9/23: Godo Keiko 7pm-9pm

Saturday, 9/24: Shinpan Seminar 10am-noon
Lunch Break noon-1pm
Shinpan Seminar 1pm-3pm
Promotion Exam 3pm-5pm
Godo Keiko 5pm-7pm

Sunday, 9/25: Student Cup 8am-noon.

The event site is at Adelbert Gym, located on the Case Western Reserve University campus. The address for the gym is 2128 Adelbert Road, Cleveland, OH, 44106. It is the big armory across from the Rainbow Babies Hospital Parking lot. Parking will be available at the Veale Center Garage for a fee.

The cost for the tournament is $15/person, or $20/person if you plan to participate in the team division. Unfortunately, eligibility for the tournament is limited to students currently enrolled in high school, university/college, or graduate school, and recent alumni. It would be very much appreciated if all registration materials for the tournament is returned to me, Hiroko Matsuyama (hiroko.matsuyama@case.edu), by Tuesday, September 20th (via email! see registration forms attached). Please make checks payable to Case Kendo Club. Payment will be made upon registration, on-site. Cash is also ok! You may also register the day of, but this will incur a $5 late fee. Keep this in mind! We will also ask every participant to have signed a waiver of liability prior to participation in the tournament. Please bring the signed form with you to registration.

The cost for the promotion exam is expected to be ~$20 for the testing fee this fee is subject to change, along with a varying menjo fee depending on the rank for which you plan to test. Eligibility for the promotion exam is not limited by age or school enrollment status. Testing will only occur up to the 3rd dan. (Please be advised that in order to test through AUSKF, you must be a dues-paying member of at least 1 year.) More information will follow regarding the shinsa. Please direct any questions regarding the shinsa to Shigemi Matsuyama at sxm193@case.edu.

Bento option is also available at $10 each (comes with water) for Saturday and Sunday. Please make these checks payable to Cleveland Kendo Association.

The Shinpan Seminar is free of cost, and I encourage all of you to attend! Any AUSKF member with a rank of 3dan and up is especially welcome. Those with 3dan attending the tournament will be asked to help with shinpan, so I would like to thank those individuals in advance!

15TH WORLD KENDO CHAMPIONSHIPS      POSTED 8.22.2010

The 15th World Kendo Championships will be held on May 25-27, 2012 in Novara, Italy. The AUSKF will hold one elimination tournament for all AUSKF kenshi (men and women) on December 5, 2010 to select individuals that will become prospective members of the U.S. National Kendo Team (“Team USA”). Prospective members will then train together for an extended period of time until selected by the Manager and Coaches of Team USA.

SHOZO KATO SENSEI ANNOUNCEMENT      POSTED 8.20.2010

We are very happy to announce that we will host Shinpan Seminar and Student Tournament in Cleveland, OH this September. All of AUSKF and FKI members are welcome to participate in these events. In addition to Kendo, we will host IAIDO practice on September 18 (Saturday).

Please note that Shozo Kato sensei (Kendo Kyoshi 8 dan, Iaido Kyoshi 7 dan), who is the vice president of GNEUSKF, will lead Kendo Shinpan seminar and IAIDO seminar.

    SHOZO KATO SENSEI ANNOUNCEMENT      POSTED 6.1.2010

  • Shozo Kato Sensei of Shidogakuin New York was promoted to hachidan (8th dan) in kendo at the spring promotion test conducted by All Japan Kendo Federation in Kyoto on May 1, 2010. Also this year happens to be the 25th anniversary for the establishment of Shidogakuin.

    We are going to have a keiko-kai (formal practice session) and a shukuga-kai (celebration party) in honor of his recent achievement and 25 years of dedication to teaching of kendo and iaido.

    Please find the details in the attached file. You can participate in this event by practicing kendo at the keiko-kai, celebrating at the shukuga-kai, and/or donating to the fund to purchase a gift for Kato Sensei.

    Please note the due information for AUSKF/GNEUSKF. It is very important to have everybody registered in the AUSKF/GNEUSKF roster for 2010, especially for liability issues and participation in promotion tests, tournaments.     Dear Sensei and Kendo friends: GNEUSKF has scheduled a shimpan seminar on Saturday, February 20, the day before the annual Shidogakuin Youth and Collegiate tournament. Chief Instructor is Shozo Kato Sensei. All levels are welcome. Doors open at 2:30 pm. Seminar starts at 3:00 p.m. Godou keiko follows. The event will end by 7:00 p.m. There is no fee for GNEUSKF member. For non-GNEUSKF participant, a small voluntary contribution will be appreciated. Please register by sending name, age, rank, dojo, federation (if not GNEUSKF member) to Isabella Church at bchurch@kendoka.org no later than Wednesday, February 17.
